4 Tips For A Terrific Family Trip To The Movie Theater

My family has been waiting to see Disney’s Zootopia since we saw the preview before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Opening next weekend, this looks like a perfect family movie that both my 4-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son can enjoy. Here are four tips that we use to have a terrific family trip to the movie theater.

  1. Choose the right movie time to keep everyone happy. This usually means avoiding meal times so that we can enjoy snacks but not have starving children who turn into vicious animals. I typically find that morning movies seem to go splendidly with the toddler crowd.
  2. Bring or buy snacks and then bring some extra snacks. A 4-year-old is so excited to dig into their popcorn, sits back in their cozy theater seat, and spills said popcorn all over the floor. Not a pretty picture. Bringing a variety of snack options along with extras can usually ensure that everyone will be pleased and we don’t need to panic if we drop something on the sticky movie theater floor.
  3. Bring ziploc/freezer bags. Best way to divide snacks, keep things neat, and avoid the above disaster sequence. Prepacked ziploc bags with small amounts of treats seem to go over big with kids. Another option for the kid that is always hungry is to ziploc a small Mickey-shaped sandwich. Refilling ziploc bags from a big bucket of popcorn makes it easy and prevents little hands reaching for the bucket with popcorn flying everywhere.
  4. Bring headphones for sensitive little ears. Is it just me or have movie theaters become very loud? There are times when it can just be a bit of sensory overload. It may seem like overkill, but for anyone that has sensory sensitivities, headphones can really make the difference between a fun movie theater experience versus a stressful event.

    Thanks for the great tips.

  2. […] Here are my core memories, as a first-time attendee… Family/Life Balance. It was a treat to hear from Jonas Rivera, Producer and VP of Production for Inside Out. We also had a sneak peek of this clever family film. With a brilliant dialogue and cast of emotional characters, this film can stir a post-movie dialogue with kids about their emotions. Keeping with the spirit of the film, I wrote a post about helping kids express their emotions. Mr. Rivera also discussed trying to find that balance in family life. It was a gift that my family could share with me the experience of the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. My daughter’s first trip to the movie theater was at #DisneySMMC and she absolutely loved it. Since then, we’ve taken quite a few family trips to the movie theater and here are some tips. […]
