Family comes in all shapes and sizes

I was thrilled to be asked to comment for an article in Fit Pregnancy last week and am happy to share it here. http://www.fitpregnancy.com/parenting/sex-relationships/pregnancy-america-does-marriage-matter. I love having an opportunity to share information on fertility, pregnancy, and support. While some women do experience a natural, smooth road towards becoming a mother, I’ve worked with so many women who are faced with unexpected difficulties – either trying to conceive, maintaining pregnancy, or postpartum issues (myself included).

I’ve learned over the 10+ years of being a nurse that nobody can understand what another person is going through. One of my goals as a fertility nurse is to empower women with education and offer support to those looking into fertility treatment and options. It can be an incredibly overwhelming process and isolating – despite the fact that 1 in 8 couples experience fertility issues. *

This is one of the forces behind my decision to begin sharing more of my perspective as a fertility nurse, and my pregnancy experience, here on this blog. I hope to reach as many women/couples as possible and provide information that could help them make more informed decisions along their path towards building a family.

Here is one of my treasured pictures and one of the few we have while still in the hospital when my son was born. He is very tan from the bili lights (like a little oompa loompa) to treat jaundice and I had received 2 blood transfusions. I always feel incredibly grateful when I see this picture because it reminds me of how truly lucky and blessed we both were to be healthy and going home.
